Foz Do Iguaçu seen by Jean-Paul Delfino
As the fourth largest city of the Parana state, Foz de Iguaçu, also named Land of the cataracts, seems to have only been built to show the rest of the world the unequalled power of its waters. Those waters, source of all living things, first appear in the form of two mighty rivers, whose confluence is a distinctive characteristic of the landscape: the Iguaçu and Parana rivers. But those two streams, rolling proudly along their beds to merge into a single flow, seem almost insignificant when compared to the famous falls…
The Iguaçu falls are before anything else, a spectacular and unending show with the crashing sound of huge masses breaking on the rocks, and the disproportionate dimensions of a natural creation whose power is three times superior to that of the Niagara falls. In that national park, water is everywhere, compelling humans to build fantastic masterpieces such as Fraternity bridge and Friendship bridge or the Itaipu dam on the Parana river. Remember that in Iguaçu, water doesn’t belong to anybody since it stands precisely on the three borders that unite Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
When at last, after having spent hours on end watching the unbelievable daily performance of the falls, you feel as if you had been knocked senseless and made drunk by so many views, sounds, smells and colours, Iguaçu can also show its softer side and will takes visitors for a walk along its paths. Over there, the Bosque Guarani, the town’s zoological gardens, allows one to discover an unrivalled variety of fauna and, not far from there, the bird’s Park offers a rare opportunity to see unbelievable species.
